Catalytic Self-Healing Steel

The radiation damage in steel is well known to be reduced by the addition of nanosized yttria particles, but the exact mechanism was unknown.  In a recent study, published in Journal of Nuclear Materials, Nu-FuSE researchers Jonathan Brodrick, Derek Hepburn, and Graeme Ackland show that point defects (both vacancies and interstitials) are strongly attracted to the Fe-YO interface, where they recombined, eliminating the damage.  An open access version of the paper is available on the open e-print archive arXiv repository here.
